Some studies of the Journal of the American Medical Association are surprising, others not so much. In a less than surprising study, JAMA reports that for-profit hospices may be selecting patients who are less expensive to treat - leaving the higher acuity and more expensive patients to nonprofit hospices. Reimbursement for most hospice services are currently based on a flat-rate per diem (currently $142.91). The average length of stay in a nonprofit hospice was 16 days as compared to 20 days in a for-profit hospice. We leave you to draw your own conclusions.
